Textile Finishing in Germany industry analysis

The development of the textile finishing industry is heavily dependent on the demand for clothing and textiles in Germany. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, consumers purchased significantly fewer textiles and clothing in 2020, which is why fewer such products had to be finished. Accordingly, textile finishers saw a considerable slump in sales in 2020. Due to the improving order situation, sales increased again in 2021 and 2022. However, this was offset by increased costs along the entire value chain due to supply chain disruptions and availability problems with raw and auxiliary materials, which reduced industry profits. Overall, industry turnover has fallen by an average of 2.2% per year over the last five years. In 2024, sales are expected to fall by 1.7% compared to the previous year to just under 1.2 billion euros. Against the backdrop of falling consumer prices and higher wage settlements, consumer spending on clothing and shoes is likely to increase in the current year, favouring higher production volumes in the German clothing industry and higher sales in textile finishing. Nevertheless, the industry is coming under pressure from increasing environmental awareness among the population and politicians. Due to stricter regulations regarding energy and water consumption as well as the use of chemicals and the purification of waste water, industry players must invest in the implementation of the relevant requirements. Increasing bureaucratic costs as a result of stricter sustainability requirements as well as continued high energy and raw material costs are having a negative impact on the business of industry players. The attacks by Houthi militias on cargo ships in the Red Sea are also leading to longer delivery times for raw and auxiliary materials, such as chemicals, yarns and special dyes, and therefore to higher transport costs.Over the next five years, annual turnover growth is expected to average 1.4% to 1.2 billion euros. The number of finishing companies is also expected to increase only slightly over this period. Increasing imports of ready-made clothing and textiles from Asia, especially China, pose a challenge, as a result of which fewer finishing activities are being utilised by industry players. Increasing environmental awareness is also helping to keep demand for new clothing low.

Trends and Insights

  • Company insolvencies and pandemic-related sales losses have led to a reduction in employment. In the future, the switch to digitally controlled processes should enable further personnel savings. However, personnel costs will remain high due to rising average wages.
  • Increasing environmental awareness poses a threat to revenues from the dyeing of fabrics. Not only does the dyeing process consume large quantities of water, but the energy required for the final drying of the textiles is also very high.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia is home to a particularly large number of finishing companies due to its good production infrastructure. Companies in Hesse can benefit from the proximity to numerous weaving mills whose fabrics are finished by industry participants.
  • Imports of already finished textiles threaten industry turnover. Foreign competitors can offer industry services at lower prices thanks to lower wage levels, among other things.

Industry Statistics and Trends

Market size and recent performance (2014-2029)

Industry revenue has declined at a CAGR of 2.2 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated €1.1bn in 2024.

Trends and Insights

The sales trend is suffering in particular from weak demand from clothing manufacturers

  • The weak sales and profit development in recent years is primarily due to the declining demand from clothing manufacturers. Although demand from manufacturers of other textiles has been somewhat more stable, they do not form as large a sales market as domestic clothing manufacturers.
