The manmade fibre manufacturing industry is expected to generate sales of 2.1 billion euros in 2024. This corresponds to a decline of 4.9% compared to the previous year. Since 2019, the turnover of German manmade fibre manufacturers has fallen by an average of 2.9% per year. The loss of sales is partly due to competitive pressure from Asian, particularly Chinese, manmade fibre manufacturers, which are driving down prices on the global market. German producers are therefore increasingly avoiding price competition and trying to differentiate themselves from the competition through the quality of their products and serve niche markets. In 2020, industry sales fell by 16.8% due to the pandemic. Commodity prices have risen significantly since autumn 2020 as industrial companies replenish their stocks. The increased commodity price level has a two-sided effect on the industry. On the one hand, higher prices have to be paid for crude oil-based chemical raw materials, while on the other hand, higher market prices can be demanded for industry products. However, the further rise in raw material prices at the beginning of 2022 due to the Ukraine crisis is largely negative from an industry perspective, as the increased costs cannot be fully passed on to customers. The industry's production volume slumped significantly in 2020 due to the pandemic and is still likely to be below the 2019 level in 2024, resulting in lower demand for the industry's products. By contrast, the industry benefited from the fact that consumers invested more in the interior design of their homes during the pandemic and therefore purchased products based on man-made fibres, such as curtains.By 2029, IBISWorld expects industry turnover to grow by an average of 0.1% per year, meaning that it will amount to 2.1 billion euros in 2029. Even suppliers of quality and niche products will only be able to escape the price pressure from imports to a limited extent, which is why IBISWorld sees the industry in the degeneration phase and expects the number of industry players and employees in 2029 to be below the level of 2024.
Industry revenue has declined at a CAGR of 2.9 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated €2.1bn in 2024.
