Roofing Activities in Germany Industry Data and Analysis

Nina Koefler
Analyst Frankfurt, Germany July 2026

At the start of the last five-year period, the roofing and carpentry sector benefited significantly from the upturn in residential construction in Germany. The driving factor behind this development was the low level of interest rates throughout much of the past five-year period. This led to many consumers embarking on the construction or renovation of their own homes, and to investors increasing their investment in property. Since 2024, however, the sector’s business outlook has deteriorated significantly. The shift in interest rates, with the European key interest rate rising from 0% to 4.5% by the end of 2023, led to a massive slump in new residential construction and, consequently, the loss of major contracts. Rising material prices for roof tiles and insulation materials significantly increased material costs and also dampened demand within the sector. This has also intensified competition for contracts within the sector. This, combined with higher overheads, has led to a slight decline in profit margins. Although growing interest in energy-efficient construction, the refurbishment and thermal insulation of roofs, and the installation of rooftop photovoltaic systems has recently supported the sector’s growth, it has not been able to fully offset the slump in demand in the building construction sector. Over the last five years, the sector’s turnover has risen by 0.2 per cent. For 2026, IBISWorld forecasts total turnover of 26.9 billion euros, representing year-on-year growth of 1.2 per cent. The recovering construction sector and rising order books in building construction are likely to drive sector growth this year.
