In the past five years, the roofing and carpentry industry has benefited noticeably from the upturn in residential construction in Germany, which will continue into 2021. Turnover in the sector has increased by an average of 1.4% per year since 2019. The driving factor behind this development was the low interest rate level for much of the past five-year period. As a result, many consumers started to build or renovate their own homes and investors increasingly invested in property. The increased level of construction activity led to a rise in demand for the industry's services. The spread of the coronavirus in 2020 did not lead to a decline in sales in the industry, as there were only a few delays in ongoing construction projects. In the past two years, however, the industry's business prospects have deteriorated noticeably with the turnaround in interest rates in the European economic area, as higher construction interest rates have greatly reduced customers' willingness to invest. New construction activity in particular has declined sharply since then. Material bottlenecks and sharp increases in construction costs had already weighed on construction site activity in 2021. IBISWorld expects total turnover of 26.8 billion euros for 2024, which corresponds to growth of 0.5% compared to 2023. Low order backlogs are also likely to dampen industry growth somewhat in the current year.IBISWorld expects the industry to grow in the coming years. The industry's turnover is expected to increase by an average of 1.9% per year to 29.5 billion euros by 2029. Climate protection measures in the construction sector and growing environmental awareness among the population are likely to contribute to industry growth, which should have a positive impact on the number of energy-efficient roof renovations. Digitalisation should also have a positive impact, as the use of digital tools should enable industry players to make project processes more efficient. However, the lack of young talent in the industry is likely to cause problems. Companies often have difficulties finding trainees. The Federal Employment Agency lists the professions of roofer and carpenter as so-called bottleneck professions.
