Poultry Raising in Germany industry analysis

The poultry farming industry is benefiting from rising per capita consumption of poultry meat, while per capita consumption of eggs is declining. At the same time, the domestic self-sufficiency rate for eggs rose from 70.6% in 2019 to 75.7% in 2022. In addition, the growing requirements for husbandry conditions are resulting in enormous costs and a high level of bureaucracy for industry players, with long waiting times and a high degree of planning uncertainty. The economic situation of poultry farmers is further aggravated by high feed prices, which were at an eight-year high in 2022 and will still be significantly higher in 2024 than in 2021. The outbreak of war in Ukraine also caused energy prices to rise, which has been a burden on industry players ever since. Further additional costs arose from the rearing of brother cocks, as male chicks may no longer be killed since 1 January 2022. Over the past five years, the outbreak of bird flu has meant that tens of thousands of animals have had to be culled at regular intervals. The coronavirus crisis led to a decline in demand from the out-of-home market, which could not be compensated for by the increase in demand from private households. Over the past five years, the industry has therefore recorded an average annual decline in turnover of 0.2%. In the current year, turnover is expected to increase by 1.3% to 5.7 billion euros. The reason for the industry's moderate growth in the current year is the gradual improvement in the consumer climate. The rising per capita consumption of poultry meat is also having a positive effect on industry sales, while a decline in per capita egg consumption over the past five years has had a negative effect on the industry's sales development. In the period from 2024 to 2029, the industry is expected to record average annual sales growth of 1.1% and industry sales of 6 billion euros in 2029. Demand for poultry meat is expected to continue to rise, while per capita egg consumption is likely to fluctuate. The combination of the expected high feed and energy costs with further animal welfare and climate protection requirements is likely to significantly slow down sales growth.

Trends and Insights

  • Centring has been prohibited by law since January 2022. From 2024, interventions on a hen's egg and the termination of the breeding process after the sixth day of incubation are also to be banned. Alternatives to these practices are associated with higher costs for industry players.
  • Poultry meat is the best-selling product in the industry. The per capita consumption of poultry meat is increasing, which means that growth in this product segment can be expected in the future.
  • The largest proportion of poultry farmers are based in southern Germany. Around half of all German organic poultry farms are located in Bavaria.
  • Competition in poultry farming is moderate. The individual farms have ever higher poultry stocks, because larger poultry stocks enable farmers to save costs and thus remain competitive. Organic poultry farming is a profitable market niche.
