Motor Vehicle Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

In the current year, turnover in the automotive manufacturing sector is expected to increase by 0.4% year-on-year to €565.7 billion. For the entire period from 2019 to 2024, this results in an average annual increase in turnover of 2.4%. Following the sharp slump in sales in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, this is primarily due to price increases. The industry was able to record sales growth in 2021 and 2022, but supply bottlenecks and other effects of the coronavirus crisis and the war in Ukraine prevented higher production volumes. Industry players had to switch their production or even completely interrupt it in some cases, primarily due to a shortage of semiconductor products. In addition, vehicle manufacturers are still undergoing a transformation process and are increasingly switching to electric vehicles. < />The coronavirus pandemic led to a significant slump in demand and sales in 2020, from which the industry subsequently recovered, mainly thanks to price increases. In the current year, a slight improvement in the business and consumer climate is likely to increase demand for new vehicles, while the rise in monthly household income will also have a positive impact on domestic demand. In addition, international demand is likely to increase further due to a growing global gross domestic product. The trend towards electromobility remains a growth factor in the industry. Demand for electric cars was boosted by government subsidies until 2023, but these have now expired.IBISWorld expects industry turnover to increase by an average of 1.2% per year over the next five years and reach 601.7 billion euros in 2029. In view of the high labour and ancillary costs at German locations, the relocation of production facilities abroad is expected to continue. The major automotive groups are under great pressure to innovate and must increasingly invest in research and development in order to remain market leaders. In addition to the further development of electric vehicles, the areas of digitalisation and autonomous driving are particularly important. However, this also creates new sales potential based on digital services, among other things. Legal regulations such as the ban on the registration of fossil fuel combustion engines and new mobility solutions such as car sharing or car subscriptions will continue to shape the industry in the future and drive forward the powertrain revolution.

Trends and Insights

  • China is currently the most important automotive market and an important buyer of German car exports. However, German manufacturers only achieve low sales figures in the electric car sector in China.
  • Currently, the largest share of industry sales is generated by cars and motorhomes with petrol engines. However, the proportion of sales generated by cars and motorhomes with hybrid or electric drives is growing steadily.
  • The population and the average net household income of a region have a significant influence on the choice of location by car manufacturers. Car manufacturers benefit from geographical proximity to a high-income population.
  • Competition in the automotive manufacturing industry is very intense. By offering attractive prices, reducing fuel consumption, equipping vehicles, new designs and appealing new editions, industry players are trying to set themselves apart from their competitors.
