Hotels in Germany industry analysis

In the period from 2019 to 2024, turnover in this sector fell by an average of 3.8% per year. This negative development was caused by the slump in revenue in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the slow recovery from this shock. Until 2019, the rising number of arrivals from domestic travellers and foreign guests ensured stable revenue growth for hotels, inns and guesthouses. As the pandemic has severely restricted international travel options since 2020, at least temporarily, due to cancelled flights and closed borders, the number of guests staying at accommodation establishments in this sector has also fallen significantly compared to previous years. With the lifting of infection protection measures and travel restrictions, industry revenue increased significantly again in 2022. For the current year, IBISWorld expects turnover to grow by 5.5% to 29.8 billion euros. The positive revenue development in the hotel industry up to 2019 was primarily due to the good economic situation and the resulting increase in net household income, as consumers with higher incomes were able to afford more holidays and hotel stays. In addition to domestic tourism, the rising number of foreign guests also had a positive effect on the turnover of industry players. The spread of the coronavirus brought both tourism and business travel to a standstill in spring 2020, forcing many industry players to temporarily close down and apply for short-time work benefits. Although both the economy and tourism have recovered from the consequences of the pandemic in recent years, high energy prices, rising minimum wages and the ongoing staff shortage have led to numerous insolvencies and takeovers. At the same time, more new hotels are opening again, particularly international hotel chains. In the coming years, the integration of new media and the increased supply of private accommodation will pose the greatest challenges. Increasing digitalisation requires accommodation providers to invest in new technologies and expand their digital infrastructure, but also offers opportunities for growth. Between 2024 and 2029, industry revenue is expected to increase by an average of 3.5% per year to 35.3 billion euros. The number of companies and employees is also expected to develop slightly positively.

Trends and Insights

  • In some regions of Germany, the hotel industry is suffering from a shortage of skilled labour. In structurally weaker regions, where the number of overnight stays is subject to strong seasonal fluctuations, the staffing situation has been critical for several years.
  • Room rental is the most important service in the industry, followed by food and beverage offerings. Additional services such as wellness offers, sports courses or the rental of conference rooms help industry players to stand out from the competition.
  • The distribution of hotels, inns and guesthouses in Germany is determined by the attractiveness of the individual regions for holiday trips. Particularly popular are coastal areas on the North Sea and Baltic Sea as well as large lakes such as Lake Constance in the Süd region.
  • There is fierce competition in the hotel, inn and guesthouse sector. Industry players compete with each other on location, price, service offering, marketing and loyalty point programmes.
