Cinemas in Germany industry analysis

Since 2019, industry revenue has fallen at an average annual rate of 0.9%. In addition to revenue losses due to cinema closures and social distancing rules after reopening, an increased shift in demand towards streaming services was observed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The strong revenue growth in 2022 was partly due to the release of postponed blockbusters, which attracted more viewers to cinemas again. German cinemas also recorded a significant increase in admissions in 2023. Cinemas continued to invest in their infrastructure and set the course for future growth. To invest in numerous modernisation measures, cinemas took advantage of the federal government's "Future Cinema Programme" funding, among other things. Renovations have had a positive impact on the recovery in visitor numbers following the coronavirus pandemic. Modernised cinemas have recovered more quickly from the pandemic compared to non-renovated locations. In 2020, sales are expected to grow by 1.5% year-on-year to €1.6 billion. This should bring sales back to around the pre-crisis level of 2019. The KulturPass, which was launched in June 2023, has proven to be a successful concept for cinemas. By the end of December, a ticket volume of more than 2.5 million euros had been redeemed in over 740 participating cinemas. The Culture Pass has been continued since March 2024. This gives young people the opportunity to enjoy cultural events free of charge or at a reduced price. This has a positive impact on visitor numbers and industry turnover. In the next five years, the industry is expected to grow by an average of 1.4% per year. Industry turnover is therefore expected to reach 1.7 billion euros in 2029. Competition from digital entertainment offerings remains a challenge. Examples of this include competing video offerings such as streaming flat rates or digital film downloads, as well as the gaming sector. Digitalisation makes it easier for consumers to access alternatives such as streaming services, video portals or illegal downloads. Another development that is likely to intensify in the coming years is the clearly selective cinema behaviour, which leads to blockbusters being watched, especially those that are expensively produced and heavily advertised. The ability to reach potential cinema target groups communicatively also remains a challenge for the cinema industry.

Trends and Insights

  • The number of 3D films influences average ticket prices and thus industry revenue. In the first half of 2023, ticket prices rose significantly due to the large number of 3D films, which had a positive impact on revenue.
  • The cinemas generate around a third of their revenue from snacks and drinks. The most popular film genres in terms of revenue are comedies, dramas and action films.
  • The majority of cinemas can be found in southern Germany. Consumer spending on leisure and culture is somewhat higher in southern Germany than in the other regions of Germany. This makes the region particularly attractive for opening cinemas.
  • Streaming services are the most important competitor for cinemas. The fact that cinema films are being shown for ever shorter periods in cinemas and broadcast ever faster on television or streaming portals is having a negative impact on the attractiveness of cinemas.
