Analyst Melbourne, Australia May 2026

The Fruit and Vegetable Processing industry has grappled with intensified import competition and low profitability resulting from supermarkets flooding the market with private-label brands and diverting sales from established manufacturers. The shift towards supermarket private-label products has pressured processors to reduce prices, eroding profit margins in the industry. Supermarkets have also increasingly sourced from overseas processors, driving imports to surge from meeting 46.9% of domestic demand in 2020-21 to 65.9% in 2025-26. A consumer shift towards fresh and minimally processed foods has decreased demand for traditional processed products high in sodium and preservatives.
