Convention & Trade Fair Services in Germany industry analysis

Industry sales have risen again after the sharp slump caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but many players continued to struggle with the consequences of the crisis and a cooling overall economic mood for a long time, which is still slowing down the industry's recovery today. Profit margins have recovered with the restart, as regular appointments, higher space utilisation and more visitors are covering fixed costs, while sponsorship and ticketing are picking up again. Following far-reaching changes, the industry has reorganised its business model and transformed events into digital platforms that are accessible all year round. Content hubs with newsrooms, directories, podcasts and customisable content ensure visibility and reach throughout the year. Live streams and on-demand formats are used for international scaling. At the same time, international expansion was prioritised. To this end, new concepts were implemented in high-growth regions, collaborations were sought and own subsidiaries were founded in order to transfer the brands to new markets. Massive sustainability programmes promote investments in photovoltaics, charging infrastructure, modular reusable stand construction systems and the integration of local public transport into tickets in order to increase cost and planning security. On average, this has resulted in an annual growth rate of 22.7% since 2020.

In the current year, content hubs, premium access and data analysis packages are supporting monetisation beyond space rental, while digital academy formats are engaging the community and attracting qualified participants. Sustainability goals guide investments in energy-efficient infrastructures and strengthen the attractiveness of the location. At the same time, long visa waiting times in individual countries of origin remain an operational risk that can lead to space reductions, cancellations and fewer rebookings in the short term. For this reason, providers offer invitation services and centralised forms. Industry turnover will grow by 7.9% to 10.9 billion euros this year. The overall economic slowdown is dampening momentum, but is being partially cushioned by international demand and digital reach.

In the future, AI-supported matchmaking tools in event apps are likely to enable personalisation, automate appointments and identify high-quality contacts, which should increase the revisit rate, loyalty and pricing power. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality enable virtual demonstrations without the need for transport and multi-sensory experiences that enable premium positioning and higher ticket prices. Curated, focussed formats complement space-intensive large trade fairs, improve relevance and efficiency and reduce fixed costs. At the same time, energy costs are falling due to decarbonisation investments after amortisation and dependence on volatile energy markets, supported by large-scale photovoltaic systems and efficient heating and cooling systems. International expansion remains a core pillar, including new concepts in high-growth regions and partnership structures. Sales are expected to increase by an average of 3.4% over five years and reach 12.9 billion euros in 2030.

Trends and Insights

  • Long visa waiting times impair internationality and lead to a direct loss of sales at trade fairs in Germany. Exhibitors and visitors from key export countries are cancelling more frequently, which reduces stand rental, ticket and service revenues and impacts subsequent events due to declining satisfaction.
  • The manufacturing industry is the sector's largest sales market. The industry was recently hit hard by high energy and raw material prices as well as supply bottlenecks, which impacted demand for industry services. However, its share of sales is likely to grow again in the future.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia has more industry companies than any other federal state thanks to the trade fair and congress locations in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. Not only the proximity to manufacturing companies and research institutions is an advantage, but also the good infrastructure.
  • As an alternative to domestic organisers, companies often commission trade fair, exhibition and congress organisers from abroad. Many foreign organisers can offer their services more cheaply than their German competitors due to lower rental prices, lower wage costs and less regulation.
