Automobile Suppliers in Germany industry analysis

The entire automotive industry is undergoing a period of upheaval. Car manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers = OEMs) and their suppliers have to deal with trends such as digitalisation and electromobility. The internationalisation of German automotive suppliers has progressed even further in recent years due to the relocation of production by German OEMs abroad and the increasing importance of foreign sales markets such as China. They generate the majority of their turnover from exports. From 2020, the industry was hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine. In the current year, however, industry turnover is expected to increase again by 1.1% to €253.9 billion. Since 2019, this means average annual sales growth of 1.3%.OEMs should continue to recover in the current year as disrupted supply chains continue to unravel and the semiconductor shortage becomes less of an issue. This should lead to higher production volumes, which will have a positive impact on demand for industry products. The continued high energy prices in particular are having a negative impact, leading to higher production costs and potentially impacting profit margins. While suppliers of parts and components for electric vehicles continue to face rising demand, companies specialising in parts for combustion engines will have to adapt their product portfolio. The short-term effects of the discontinued environmental bonus on demand for electric cars remain to be seen. The transformation process in the industry will continue in the coming years. Vehicles with combustion engines will increasingly be replaced by electric vehicles, particularly due to legal regulations. This is forcing automotive suppliers in particular, who specialise in the production of parts and components for combustion engines, to make further adjustments. At the same time, the trend towards electromobility also offers growth potential. In addition to the demand for batteries, the need for electronic and electrical components is also increasing. For this reason, IBISWorld expects industry sales to increase by an average of 0.8% per year over the next five years. It is therefore likely to reach 263.6 billion euros in 2029.

Trends and Insights

  • The automotive industry is increasingly shifting its production capacities abroad. German manufacturers only produced around 30% of their cars in Germany in 2023, and since 2018 they have been producing more cars in China alone than in Germany.
  • The automotive supplier industry generates its largest share of sales with car bodies. Parts and components in the car body sector are less affected by new technological trends than other product groups and have a stable share of sales.
  • Suppliers prefer to locate in geographical proximity to car manufacturers. A large number of car manufacturers and suppliers can be found in the federal states of the Süd region in particular.
  • There is fierce competition in the industry. Automotive suppliers compete with each other on price, quality and design as well as on delivery reliability and flexibility.
