The 2022 Winter Olympics posed a threat to NBCUniversal’s media rights
In 2014, NBCUniversal made a deal for American media rights to the Olympics through 2032. Amid geopolitical tensions and the ongoing pandemic, the company suffered from a 42.0% decline in viewership from 2018 for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Despite the recent launch of NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service in 2020 and additional viewership from airing right after the Super Bowl, this sharp decline threatens company profitability as well as the outlook for the company to continue to hold media rights, particularly as the decline is driven by pandemic-related restrictions and geopolitical tensions with the host country.
COVID|Discontinued ActivityIn response to volatile demand in the wake of the first COVID-19 surge, the company undertook a comprehensive cost reduction program, aimed at shoring up labor and supply costs.
