Mental Health Practitioners in the US Industry Data and Analysis

Tina Fine
Analyst New York, United States August 2026

Workforce shortages among mental health providers, including psychologists, therapists, counselors and social workers, have constrained industry revenue growth even as demand for services continues to rise. In 2024, 23.4% of US adults experienced a mental illness, while treatment access lagged demand and as of December 2025, roughly 40.0% of the population lived in a federally designated Mental Health Professional Shortage Area. Burnout and turnover also contribute to shortages and regional factors and policy changes add further pressure. Medicare's reimbursement rate for the standard psychiatric diagnostic evaluation fell by roughly 14.0% in 2025. Federal enforcement of mental health parity rules was paused, even as new Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, a federally funded model that guarantees higher Medicaid payment rates for participating clinics, began operating in 14 states plus Washington, D.C. Industry revenue is nonetheless expected to climb at a CAGR of 6.7% to reach $43.2 billion by 2026, a significant increase, but one that reflects a one-time step up in demand during the 2021 post-pandemic surge. Yearly growth has slowed since 2024, with only a 1.1% gain in 2026, while profit narrowed.
