The 2023-24 storm season brought 12 named storms, the most since the naming system launched in 2015, with eastern Scotland recording its wettest October on record in 2023 as Storm Babet prompted two red rain warnings, while England and Wales combined saw their third-wettest three-day period on record.The pattern then reversed in 2025, when the UK experienced its driest spring since 1974 and its warmest summer on record, leaving the annual total at 1,041.2 millimetres, or 90% of the long-term average. The opening weeks of 2026 were exceptionally wet, as a strong and unusually southerly jet stream steered a succession of low-pressure systems towards the UK, but the summer of 2026 swung back to extreme dryness. England recorded its driest July on record with just 6.5 millimetres of rainfall, less than half the previous record set in 1911, and drought conditions affected the whole of Wales and around half of England.
