Pharmaceutical Wholesaling in Germany industry analysis

In the period from 2019 to 2024, industry turnover grew by an average of 0.4% per year. This growth is primarily due to rising sales figures in the customer markets. The coronavirus crisis also contributed to rising demand for pharmaceuticals and medical products. In the past two years, however, energy price-related cost increases have had a significant negative impact on earnings. Despite the German government's relief packages and the statutory electricity and gas price brakes, total energy costs in the industry more than doubled by the end of 2023 compared to 2020. At the same time, the statutory price fixing for prescription drugs did not allow cost increases to be passed on to downstream trade levels. The increasing legal requirements of pharmaceutical policy, such as the Supply Chain Duty of Care Act, have been an additional burden for years. Furthermore, structural changes in the pharmaceutical market are having an impact on the cost and earnings situation. While the proportion of cost-intensive medicines is growing, the number of high-priced medicines is also increasing. This means that more and more expensive medicines tie up more and more capital and result in lower margins. In 2022 and 2023, many stocks were not available or only available with difficulty due to extraordinarily high demand and increasing inefficiency in the pharmaceutical industry, causing supply bottlenecks in the wholesale trade. Numerous medications, such as antibiotics, cold and diabetes medications, are also likely to be in limited supply in 2024, slowing down industry-specific sales growth. Accordingly, inflation-adjusted growth of 0.5% is expected for 2024 compared to the previous year, meaning that the industry is likely to generate total sales of 159.3 billion euros. The wholesale of pharmaceutical, medical and orthopaedic products is benefiting from the population's increasing demand for a wide range of medicines. Due to the rise in life expectancy and the increase in age-related illnesses, the demand for pharmaceuticals has increased significantly in recent years.Turnover is expected to grow by an average of 3.4% per year until 2029. As a result, the industry's total turnover is expected to rise to 188.5 billion euros. The main drivers of this growth are the continued rise in life expectancy and the increase in rare diseases in the population. An increased focus of producers on direct sales could become problematic for the industry. Only a few companies would be able to compete with manufacturers on price, and the market would shrink considerably as a result.

Trends and Insights

  • The wholesalers are focusing on older target groups. Together with the pharmacies, they have developed their own business concepts for older people in recent years and specifically trained their employees to better cater to the needs of senior citizens.
  • Laboratory equipment in particular saw increased demand during the pandemic, as laboratory capacities were significantly expanded as part of the testing strategy. However, increasing investment in research and development is also having a positive impact on the product segment.
  • In a regional comparison, most wholesalers are located in the centre region. The proportion of companies in the sector roughly corresponds to the proportion of the region's population.
  • There is very strong competition within the industry. The increasing consolidation of the industry has led to an increase in competition on the market.
