Engine & Turbine Manufacturing in Germany industry analysis

The industry's business is divided into various sub-sectors. In addition to steam and gas turbines for conventional power generation, turbines for water and wind power plants are also manufactured. The production of marine engines is also included. Business in the individual industry segments is subject to different regional and economic influences. In this respect, the respective sub-segments usually develop independently of each other, meaning that an overall analysis is only of limited value. Over the past five years, industry sales have increased at an average rate of 0.1% per year. It is therefore expected to reach 54.1 billion euros in 2024.In the past five years, the industry was characterised above all by the sharp fluctuations in raw material prices, particularly oil and steel prices, as well as the energy transition accompanied by stricter environmental regulations. These factors posed a greater challenge to the industry than expected. The intense competition also contributed to the tense situation. The export business declined. In addition, the coronavirus pandemic had a significant impact on sales development, as shipbuilding, an important sales market, temporarily collapsed in 2020. Since 2023, however, the signs have been pointing to growth again, which is partly due to the rearmament of the naval and air forces. Compared to the previous year, industry turnover is expected to increase by 1% in 2024.In the next five years, the industry is likely to remain on its new growth trajectory. IBISWorld is forecasting an average annual increase in industry turnover of 1.3% over this period, meaning that this is likely to amount to 57.8 billion euros in 2029. This forecast is primarily based on the opportunities that will open up in the wind energy segment. In addition, economic growth in Central and South America appears to be cautiously accelerating, which harbours the potential for the industry to expand its exports there. The European economy should be able to record growth over the next five years. However, the fact that the Chinese economy is likely to slow down gradually could have an inhibiting effect on the industry's development, especially as geopolitical tensions and increasing protectionist tendencies, for example on the part of the USA, are having a negative impact on business.

Trends and Insights

  • The export-orientated industry is heavily dependent on developments on the global markets. The slowdown in global economic growth and the trade conflicts between the USA, the European Union and China have therefore had a negative impact on the industry in recent years.
  • The industry's top-selling product group is parts for compression-ignition engines. As marine and industrial engines are very expensive, parts are often replaced rather than the entire engine.
  • The South region is home to the highest number of companies in the sector. Many companies from upstream and downstream sectors such as the steel industry or energy production are based there.
  • There is fierce competition among manufacturers of combustion engines and turbines. The industry players compete primarily on price and product quality.
