Landscaping Services in the US Industry Data and Analysis

Analyst New York, United States May 2026

The US landscaping services industry has expanded steadily on the back of a resilient property market, with homeowners channeling rising disposable income into exterior improvements that protect and enhance asset values. Low interest rates through 2022 fueled a housing boom, driving strong demand for installation and design work. While the Federal Reserve's subsequent rate hikes cooled housing turnover, they did not derail residential spending. Homeowners continued investing in maintenance and upgrades even as the for-sale market slowed and commercial clients provided an additional buffer, with hotels, resorts and institutional property owners generating higher revenue per service call and offering the kind of recurring contract income that smooths out seasonal volatility. Industry revenue has grown at a CAGR of 3.0%, reaching $176.7 billion through 2026, with 0.9% growth recorded in 2026 alone. Also, despite persistent cost pressures from chemicals and other inputs, average profit margins have held at approximately 7.9%.Climate change is simultaneously reshaping the technical demands placed on landscaping professionals. Rising temperatures and increasingly erratic rainfall are stressing traditional plantings and turf systems, pushing contractors and their clients toward more resilient, water-efficient designs. Native and drought-tolerant species, drip irrigation systems, smart weather-responsive controllers and sustainable hardscaping materials such as permeable pavers, recycled concrete and reclaimed wood are moving from niche offerings to mainstream practice as both regulatory pressure and client expectations shift. Landscapers who build expertise in these climate-adaptive solutions are positioning themselves for stronger margins and longer-term client relationships than conventional lawn care can deliver.Looking ahead, the industry's growth trajectory rests on several converging demand drivers. Gradual easing of interest rates, assuming inflation moderates, should reinvigorate housing activity and unlock discretionary spending on landscape improvements, while rising per capita disposable income broadens the addressable market for value-added services. An aging population increasingly committed to aging in place is emerging as a durable source of demand for low-maintenance conversions and long-term service agreements and a steady recovery in non-residential construction will give commercial-focused operators additional runway. Against this backdrop, industry revenue is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2.0%, reaching $195.0 billion over the five years to 2031.
