REPORT SNAPSHOT

Industry Analysis & Industry Trends

In the five years through 2017, revenue for the Iron Ore Mining industry in China has been declining 4.2% per year on average. In 2014 and 2015, sharply falling downstream demand and iron ore prices led revenue to decline 4.9% and 20.0%, respectively. In 2017, revenue is estimated to increase slightly 1.7% to $112.5 million.

There are over 3,600 enterprises operating in the industry, with total employment of 576,529 and expected total output of 1.3 billion tons of iron ore in 2017. China covers over one-third of its domestic demand with imported iron. The iron ore price has been falling since 2012, therefore, import values decreased from $105.2 billion in 2012 to an estimated $55.9 billion in 2017...

Industry Report - Industry Analysis Chapter

China's industrialization and urbanization drives demand for iron and steel products. In the past decade, domestic production capacities of iron and steel products have expanded greatly, requiring more iron ore as a raw material. China is the largest iron ore importing country in the world, while iron ore exports are marginal. Due to iron ore shortages in the domestic market, the government discourages exports of iron ore and promotes the exploration of new domestic mines.

The iron ore price increased strongly in 2011 and reached a historic high. However, due to the repressed performance of the Iron and Steel Smelting industry (IBISWorld industry report 3210), the iron ore price dropped considerably between 2012 and 2015 and estimated to remain at a relatively low level in 2017.
