Industrial Gas Production in Germany Industry Data and Analysis

RM
Robert Maier
Analyst Frankfurt, Germany June 2026

The turnover of German industrial gas manufacturers increased by an average of 0.1% per year between 2021 and 2026. The volatile development of electricity and natural gas prices in the first half of the past five-year period was clearly reflected in the development of turnover and earnings due to the high energy intensity of the industry. Events such as the temporary energy shortage in Europe in the months following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine led to a sharp rise in energy expenditure and significantly increased production costs for industry players. The slowdown in industrial activity in Europe after 2022 and the gradual fall in energy prices in turn led to significant declines in producer prices for industrial gases in the years that followed. Demand for industrial gases has been more stable since 2021 compared to the chemical sector as a whole, as industrial gases are used in a wide variety of areas. Higher demand from the healthcare sector and the food and beverage industry, for example, has in many cases been able to compensate for the decline in demand from the manufacturing industry observed after 2022. The focus of many industry players on high-quality speciality gases for medicine and cutting-edge technologies has strengthened the industry's resilience in volatile markets. Technical and economic hurdles in the import of industrial gases have also led to an increase in demand for on-site gas solutions. In view of the complex, cost-intensive and uncertain import logistics, more and more domestic companies are focussing on independent production directly at their production site. The profit margins of industry participants therefore remained at a satisfactory level for most of the past five years. Only in years with sharp increases in raw material and energy prices, such as 2022, were additional costs only partially passed on to customers through corresponding price adjustments. The higher energy costs in Germany compared to other European countries are putting parts of the industry under increasing pressure.
