Biotechnology Research & Development in Germany industry analysis

In the search for vaccines against the coronavirus, the biotechnology research and development (R&D) sector has attracted a great deal of public attention and set financing records over the past two years in the form of venture capital, IPOs and convertible bonds. Accordingly, turnover and expenditure on R&D by German biotechnology companies have risen significantly. Following the extraordinary momentum during the pandemic, a phase of normalisation can currently be observed. Companies are using the visibility they have gained and the improved structures to drive forward sustainable innovations and position themselves for the next development steps, with the level of sales achieved still significantly higher than before the pandemic. In addition to high energy costs, the shortage of skilled labour and a decreasing number of financing options have recently slowed down the business situation and sales development of companies in the sector. According to EY, only a third of the equity capital raised in 2020 was raised in 2022. In 2023, venture capital, which is raised in the early stages of a business start-up, fell by a third. In contrast, the amount of capital raised has improved again overall.

The industry recorded an average annual growth rate of 18.9% between 2020 and 2025. In the current year, industry turnover is expected to amount to 8.1 billion euros. This corresponds to a decline in turnover of 1% compared to the previous year. Investments are currently particularly high in companies specialising in cancer therapies. However, biotechnology companies focussing on nutritional and industrial solutions can also conclude large financing rounds. According to EY, expenditure on research and development in the German biotechnology sector rose again in 2024, recording an increase of 4% across all company types. Subsidiaries of international companies based in Germany recorded the largest increase, with a rise of 11%. Following a temporary decline in R&D expenditure in 2023, the industry is once again demonstrating its innovative strength and underpinning its claim to be a globally relevant, sustainable location in the long term.

Over the next five years, IBISWorld expects industry turnover to increase at an average annual growth rate of 1.8% and is expected to reach 8.8 billion euros in 2030. In addition to the medical sector, industry players also see great growth potential in agricultural biotechnology and industrial biotechnology. Solutions for sustainable industrial production as well as environmental, energy and nutritional issues could generate significant sales in the coming years. This makes the demands on politicians to strengthen Germany as a business location in the long term and create framework conditions that also make financing attractive for smaller companies all the louder.

Trends and Insights

  • The Federal Government is positioning Germany as a leading location for biomedical innovation with its national strategy for gene and cell-based therapies. 91 funding measures, new programmes and the establishment of specialised centres are intended to accelerate research, technology transfer and start-up culture in the field of biotechnology.
  • Companies from the pharmaceutical industry are the most important customers in the sector. Against the backdrop of an ageing society, which favours the need for pharmaceutical products, demand from this customer market is likely to increase further in the future.
  • The biotech cluster BioCon Valley, an initiative for the life sciences and healthcare industry, is located in Greifswald. Such an agglomeration of industry companies leads to a local supply of qualified labour and reduced transaction costs thanks to access to industry-specific infrastructure and industry-relevant expertise.
  • The industry is characterised by increasing competition, intensive research activities and rapid technical changes. Product development cycles are becoming ever shorter. New competitors see this as an opportunity and are entering the market.

How are IBISWorld reports created?

IBISWorld has been a leading provider of trusted industry research for over 50 years to the most successful companies worldwide. With offices in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and China, we are proud to have local teams of analysts that conduct research, data analysis and forecasting to produce data-driven industry reports.

Our analysts start with official, verified and publicly available sources of data to build the most accurate picture of each industry. Analysts then leverage their expertise and knowledge of the local markets to synthesize trends into digestible content for IBISWorld readers. Finally, each report is reviewed by one of IBISWorld’s editors, who provide quality assurance to ensure accuracy and readability.

IBISWorld relies on human-verified data and human-written analysis to compile each standard industry report. We do not use generative AI tools to write insights, although members can choose to leverage AI-based tools within the platform to generate additional analysis formats.

What data sources do IBISWorld analysts use?

Each industry report incorporates data and research from government databases, industry-specific sources, industry contacts, and our own proprietary database of statistics and analysis to provide balanced, independent and accurate insights.

Key data sources in Germany include:

  • German Federal Statistics Office (Destatis)
  • European Statistics Office (Eurostat)
  • United Nations Comtrade

Analysts also use industry specific sources to complement catch-all sources, although their perspective may focus on a particular organization or representative body, rather than a clear overview of all industry operations. However, when balanced against other perspectives, industry-specific sources provide insights into industry trends.

These sources include:

  • Industry and trade associations
  • Industry federations or regulators
  • Major industry players annual or quarterly filings

Finally, IBISWorld’s global data scientists maintain a proprietary database of macroeconomic and demand drivers, which our analysts use to help inform industry data and trends. They also maintain a database of statistics and analysis on thousands of industries, which has been built over our more than 50-year history and offers comprehensive insights into long-term trends.

How does IBISWorld forecast its data?

IBISWorld’s analysts and data scientists use the sources above to create forecasts for our proprietary datasets and industry statistics. Depending on the dataset, they may use regression analysis, multivariate analysis, time-series analysis or exponential smoothing techniques to project future data for the industry or driver. Additionally, analysts will leverage their local knowledge of industry operating and regulatory conditions to impart their best judgment on the forecast model.

IBISWorld prides itself on being a trusted, independent source of data, with over 50 years of experience building and maintaining rich datasets and forecasting tools. We are proud to be the keystone source of industry information for thousands of companies across the world.
