In den vergangenen fünf Jahren erlebte die deutsche Weberei Umsatzrückgänge um durchschnittlich 1,4 % pro Jahr, die primär der erstarkenden internationalen Konkurrenz auf dem Bekleidungs- und Heimtextilmarkt geschuldet waren. In den Jahren 2020 und 2021 kamen die negativen Auswirkungen der Coronavirus-Pandemie auf die Konsumgüterindustrie hinzu. Zudem litt die deutsche Weberei wie auch ihre Abnehmermärkte an Unterbrechungen der Lieferketten und an Verfügbarkeitsproblemen von Roh- und Hilfsstoffen, die im Laufe der Jahre 2021 und 2022 zunahmen und die Beschaffungskosten in die Höhe trieben. Diesen standen aber steigende Auftragseingänge gegenüber, welche die Umsatz- und Ergebnisentwicklung positiv beeinflussten. Im Jahr 2023 normalisierte sich das Geschäft weiter. Allerdings befanden sich wichtige Kunden wie der Warenhauskonzern Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof und Peek & Cloppenburg in einem Schutzschirmverfahren und auch der Konsum blieb angespannt. Aufgrund der schlechten Konsumstimmung haben sich viele Branchenunternehmen mit Preiserhöhungen angesichts gestiegener Kosten zurückgehalten.
