Die Reisebüros konnten vor der Pandemie von überwiegend positiven wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen profitieren. Gleichzeitig standen sie jedoch vor der Herausforderung, den Anforderungen der Digitalisierung bei gleichzeitig steigender Wettbewerbsintensität gerecht zu werden. An dieser Hürde scheiterte etwa der große britische Reiseveranstalter und Reisebürobetreiber Thomas Cook, der auch stark auf dem deutschen Markt aktiv war und im September 2019 Insolvenz anmelden musste. Die dennoch überwiegend positive Entwicklung der verbliebenen Branchenakteure wurde im ersten Quartal 2020 durch den Ausbruch der Coronavirus-Pandemie unterbrochen. Ab Mitte März 2020 schränkte die Bundesregierung das öffentliche Leben in Deutschland weitgehend ein. Die stationären Reisebüros mussten während der Lockdowns schließen. Daraus ergibt sich für den Gesamtzeitraum von 2019 bis 2024 ein durchschnittlicher jährlicher Rückgang des Branchenumsatzes von 3,8 %. 2024 dürfte der Umsatz jedoch im Zuge zunehmender Reisetätigkeiten um 1,3 % gegenüber dem Vorjahr auf 6,7 Milliarden Euro ansteigen.
