Factors influencing the spread of commercial printing activity by region include economic activity and development; population size; literacy of the population; activity in the advertising and publishing industries; local production of, and international trade in, packaged goods; and the levels of exports of printing services.
Advanced countries, where industries are developed and per capita incomes are highest, tend to have a higher per capita consumption of printed products. This means that the printing industries in North America, Europe and Japan tend to be large in relation to their populations.
