Bracing for growth
The Geosynthetics Installation Industry has benefited from the increased use of geosynthetic materials in the construction of roads, railroads, landfills and other infrastructure. Due to the industry's dependence on the US construction markets, though, particularly government spending on public infrastructure, the recession had an adverse impact on the industry. As construction markets stabilize and the widespread use of geosynthetics gains momentum, demand will turn around. The distribution of industry activity across the United States is generally consistent with the distribution of population or general economic activity. Industry activity is concentrated in the Southeast region, which accounts for about one-quarter of the total US population and economic activity. The Southeast region has about 30.0% of industry establishments. Its above-average share of industry activity is due in part to the existence of many large geographically dispersed population settlements, relative to the more concentrated settlement patterns in the Mid-Atlantic regions, for example.
