In February 2005, the Central Government announced its ambitious program to build a national rural retail network covering 70% of all villages within five years. The distribution infrastructure improvements, and preferential treatment and support from local governments allowed operators to expand into these rural areas. A significant proportion of this had been completed by 2009, with further retail expansion, including supermarkets, scheduled in 2010.
In 2011, China's GDP is expected to slow down moderately with a rate of around 9.5%, while inflationary levels will reach the highest point since 2008. Industry Report - Industry Locations Chapter
Business location analysis is based on regional data of medium and large-sized supermarkets in China in 2008. Activities were mainly concentrated in three major regions including East China, Middle South China and North China. These three regions accounted for 44.7%, 26.6% and 12.6% of total enterprise numbers, respectively, in 2008. Employment absorbed by these areas accounted for 79.2% of total industry employment in 2008.
