According to statistics from China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI), shipbuilding output in China in 2010 was 65.6 million DWT (dead weight tons), up 54.6% from 2009 and became the largest shipbuilding country in the world. About 98.9% of the ships built in China are metal ships. The volume of new orders received was 75.23 million DWT in 2010, up 90% from 2009 when new orders dropped significantly as influenced by economic crisis. The volume of handling orders was 195.90 million DWT, up 4.1% from 2009. The major increase in output volume drove industry revenue growth during the year of 17.2%.

In the five years to 2011, the growth rates of both industry revenue and value added are expected to be significantly higher than GDP growth rates that averaged about 10%. Further, the number of establishments in the industry is still increasing.
