After nearly a decade of strong and steady growth, Chinese dairy product manufacturers experienced a relatively volatile period over the five years through 2011. Manufacturers were severely affected by the melamine scandal of September 2008. This was a food safety incident in China involving milk and infant formula, as well as other food materials and components, which had been tainted with melamine.
