Total revenue of Coal Mining Industry in China is estimated at $594.0 billion in 2012, representing annualized growth rate of 31.3% since 2007. Revenue drivers over this period included rising coal prices and rapidly growing demand. To meet the ballooning domestic demand, raw coal output in China increased from 2.3 billion tons in 2007 to a 3.8 billion tons in 2012. During the same period, spending on imported coal surged 52.6% annually, from $3.1 billion to $25.5 billion. There are currently over 6,600 enterprises operating in the industry, with total employment over 5.3 million.

Within the Coal Mining industry in China, the geographic spread of coal output follows the geographic spread of coal reserves in China. The major reserves of bituminous coal and anthracite coal in China are in Shanxi and Inner Mongolia in North China; Anhui and Shandong in East China; and, Henan in the Middle South China region.
In 2012, in terms of sales revenue, the following eight provinces are expected to contribute 79.4% of industry revenue: Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Anhui, Shaanxi and Sichuan.
