In the first half of 2011, the Cinemas industry in China generated revenue of $876.7 million, which represents substantial growth compared with the same period in 2010. The industry is expected to generate revenue of $2.04 billion for the whole year, up by 29.5% from 2010, with annualized growth of 36.7% in the past five years. The number of establishments, or cinemas, in the industry is estimated to total almost 6,885 in 2011, up 6.6% for the year. These establishments are expected to employ around 34,000 people, with a total payroll of $69.8 million in 2011.

The share of Chinese films has experienced significant increases since 2004. Chinese comedies shown during the Spring Festival have become very popular. In 2010, Chinese films generated $885.7 billion or 56.3% to total industry revenue, surpassing the imported films for successively eight years. Of all the films, 59 films have earned box office takings of over $1.5 million, and most of these films are medium- and low-budget films. There were 17 films that earned box office takings of over $15 million.
