Increased working hours and busy lifestyles contributed to increased demand for canned and bottled food. Domestic demand alone has been growing at an annualized rate of 50.3% to an estimated $15.0 billion in 2012. Total industry revenue has been increasing 23.8% annually to reach $21.8 billion in 2012. Revenue growth was strongest early in the past five years, before slowing down slightly in 2009 due to export fluctuations and the global financial crisis.

Shandong province is one of the largest manufacturing provinces of this industry, accounting for 15.2% of total industry revenue in 2012. Of all canned food products in Shandong, canned vegetables and fruit constituted over 80.0% of the province's total canned food output. This is a result of the well-developed agriculture sector in the province, which provides raw materials for this industry, and the extensive transportation sector. The high revenue percentage compared to the employment level (14.4%) and enterprise level (13.5%) also indicates that enterprises benefit from economies of scale.
