Driven by increases in both domestic and foreign demand, output and revenue of the Apparel Manufacturing industry in China continued to increase steadily in the first nine months of 2011. The rising proportion of high-end products further contributes to the revenue growth. Industry revenue is estimated to have increased by 10.2% to $196.84 billion for the whole year, with an annualized increase of 16.6% from 2006 to 2011.
Exports also contributed to industry growth before 2008, with the global recession in the second half of the year having a major negative impact on foreign demand. Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong provinces in East China accounted for a relatively high level of industry revenue in 2011, at 19%, 13.2% and 8.5%, respectively. Although rising costs for labor, land, raw materials and transportation in this region have added to industry pressures, East China is still China's main apparel-manufacturing base.
