Over the past 30 years, China has become the world's second-largest manufacturer of animal feed and pet food. In the five years through 2012, industry revenue has been growing 28.2% per year on average to reach $145.8 billion. The global financial crisis slowed China's economic growth in the short term, but it did not change the overall growth path of the industry. Due to China's economic development, it has become a symbol of financial success to keep pets, particularly cats and dogs, which has increased domestic demand for pet food.

In 2012, the geographic distribution of firms within the Animal Food Manufacturing industry in China shows that industry activity is concentrated in the provinces of Shandong, Liaoning and Guangdong. These three provinces constitute 35.6% of industry revenue.
As a major grain producing area that also has a significantly developed animal husbandry industry, Shandong province is the largest production province of pet food and animal feed, contributing 12.9% to total industry revenue in 2012. The management and technology levels in this region are also relatively higher than the other regions.
