Why does industry information matter?
Everyone in business operates in a company, and each company is able to organize and control many factors influencing its operations. However, companies
are sensitive to trends that managers cannot control directly.
Successful firms interpret the factors that can be managed, hedge against the risks that can’t be controlled and exploit external trends that open new
markets. The all-encompassing “environment” in which a company operates is industry. Managers must understand competitors – and how to gain competitive
advantage – barriers to entry, industry life cycle and factors such as regulation and taxation.
The most successful companies emulate (or surpass) world’s best practice benchmarks to ensure a competitive edge in the marketplace.
Where does IBISWorld source its data?
As anyone that relies on accurate and up-to-date business intelligence will attest – the internet has revolutionized the speed with which we can access
information. But with billions of internet pages, finding the right information can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Even if you have the good
fortune to locate that information the chances are that it is out-of-date, incomplete or biased. Sourcing such material in a business report is fraught
with problems. IBISWorld is a world-leading provider of business information. We start with official and publicly available sources. Where those sources
end an IBISWorld analyst can call on industry contacts and non-public sources. They are further supported by in-house data and modeling that provides the
most accurate revenue and profit data and forecasts available.

How frequently does IBISWorld update Industry reports?
IBISWorld writes over 700 U.S. industry reports updated up to four times a year. Our update schedule ensures that you can make decisions based on information
that is current and insightful.
How does IBISWorld forecast industries?
IBISWorld collects data from publicly available sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau and County Business Patterns; the Bureau of Economic Analysis; and the
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Where public data ends, an analyst calls on industry contacts and non-public sources. They are supported by in-house data and economic modeling to provide
accurate five-year revenue and profitability forecasts. Official sources tend to be a few years old and rarely forward looking. So how does IBISWorld fill in
the gaps? IBISWorld forecasts combine an analyst’s knowledge of industry operating conditions – competition, barriers to entry, life cycle etc. – with the
future movement of key external drivers.
Key drivers include macroeconomic variables, supply chain factors, demographic and consumer data, regulation and the demand for substitute goods and/or services.
When selecting key drivers an analyst investigates which industries sell to, and buy from, an industry. They will take into account movements in the price of key
inputs; and changes in demand from industrial and consumer markets.
